AC Service | Concerning Noises
AC Service | Air conditioners are not quiet machines. They tend to make quite a bit of noise during operation, and if you’ve had yours for more than a couple months you probably know what it’s supposed to sound like. If your air conditioner starts making noises that you don’t recognize, though, it might indicate a problem. Read on for a list of a couple of the more common air conditioner noises that indicate a need for repairs.
Hissing or Gurgling
If you hear hissing or gurgling coming from your air conditioner, it’s probably the sound of air bubbles in the refrigerant line. That means it’s very likely that you have a leak in the line. Your air conditioner relies on refrigerant to siphon thermal energy from your home. Without it, your system wouldn’t be able to operate. A refrigerant leak can eventually cause a full system break down, so it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as you notice this noise.
A grinding noise indicates that your air handler bearings are wearing out. The bearings are there to prevent the motor from overheating and burning out while operating. If the bearings are not replaced, that is exactly what will happen. It’s a lot cheaper to replace bearings than it is to replace an entire air handler motor, so it’s a good idea to give us a call sooner rather than later if your AC is making grinding noises.
If your air conditioner is turning on and off every couple of minutes, it means that it’s short cycling. Short cycling is caused either by a malfunctioning thermostat or a bad compressor, and drastically increases the chances of a breakdown. Turn off your AC immediately and wait for repairs if you notice this problem.
