AC Repair | SEER Ratings
AC Repair | When you have air conditioner replacement done in your home, one of the things you should look for in a new air conditioning unit is a high SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it was adopted back in 1979 as a way to show consumers how energy efficient air conditioners are. When you are scheduling air conditioner replacement in St Petersburg, you can use SEER to make an informed decision. You can also use SEER for other HVAC components, too. Here is what you should watch for.
Central Air Conditioners
When SEER was first introduced, air conditioning units had an average SEER of 6. Today, all central air conditioners must have a SEER of at least 13, and those with a SEER of 14 or higher are considered to be high-efficiency AC units. The highest SEER at the moment is around 23, though technological advances continue to push the boundaries of energy efficiency. When doing air conditioner replacement, you should use SEER to help you decide which AC unit is right for your home.
Window Air Conditioners
Unlike central air conditioners, window air conditioners use a rating called EER that is short for Energy Efficient Ratio. It uses a slightly different calculation to decide how energy efficient a window air conditioner is, but like SEER, EER will give you an idea of how efficiently an AC unit will cool your home. Federal law requires a window AC to have an EER of 9.8, but most window units have an EER above 11.
