AC Repair | 3 Signs You Need Repair

AC Repair | As with most HVAC systems, the majority of air conditioning problems are progressive. That means that the longer they are allowed to continue, the more damage they will inflict on the rest of the system. On a long enough timeline, even a small problem can eventually become bad enough to bring down a whole system. With that in mind, you should know what signs to look for that indicate a problem with your air conditioner. The following are 3 of the most common signs that an air conditioner needs professional repair.

Short-cycling is when your air conditioner turns itself on and off quickly and repeatedly over a short period of time, instead of completing an entire cooling cycle as it should. This behavior puts the air conditioner under a great deal of stress by forcing it to endlessly repeat the most intense part of its startup cycle. It vastly increases the chance of a breakdown, and shortens the system’s lifespan.

There are a couple of possible causes for this problem. A malfunctioning thermostat could be sending mixed up signals to the air conditioner, in which case the system itself is probably fine. If it’s a faulty compressor, however, you have a very big problem. The compressor is responsible for actually keeping the core elements of the system running. If it is malfunctioning, you may have to replace the entire system. Regardless, you should call a professional as soon as you notice your system short-cycling.

Loss of Output

If your air conditioner starts to lose output, it could indicate a refrigerant leak in the system. Refrigerant is the fluid that allows the air conditioner to remove heat from the home. Without it, the system wouldn’t be able to operate. It is also possible that your evaporator coil is frozen over, which will cut it off from the home’s air. If you see ice forming on your system, or liquid pooling around it, in conjunction with a loss of output, call us right away.

Strange Noises

The most common type of strange noise coming from an air conditioner is a grinding sound. This is caused by the bearings in the air handler motor wearing down. If the bearings are not replaced, the motor will overwork itself and burn out. Once that happens, the best you can do is replace it. So if you start hearing a grinding sound you should turn off the system and call us.
