Is The Air Quality In Your Building Unhealthy?

Air Quality at the Workplace

air’s invisibility makes it easy to take it for granted. This is a big mistake as air quality can have a big impact on our health and productivity. Unwanted particles may be floating around causing irritation and respiratory ailments. They make us feel unwell, preventing us from functioning at our optimum level at work. Unhealthy employees translate into an inefficient business with excessive absences that hurt operations. Monitor the state of the air inside your building to see if it is becoming a liability or not. Commercial indoor air quality can be gauged in two ways: occupant dissatisfaction and ASHRAE standards compliance.

Occupant Dissatisfaction

Building occupants may be surveyed from time to time to get their inputs regarding air quality. A dissatisfaction rate exceeding 20% is a definite red flag. The management should take the complaints seriously as this level is already quite alarming. Perhaps an investigation is in order as to what the complaints are all about and whether they point to a particular problem within the premises. If so, then this should be resolved immediately. Even dissatisfaction rates slightly lower than this merit careful study to prevent escalation.

ASHRAE Standards Compliance

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers have established standards for commercial indoor quality. Experts can be called in if a problem is suspected so that they can take pertinent measurements using special tools. Failure to comply with these standards means that the building has indeed poor air quality. The readings will be able to point to the possible culprit making the solution easier to arrive at. This is important as findings show that some pollutants are present in larger quantities indoors than they are outdoors. Dust, for instance, can be trapped inside a room and accumulate to intolerable levels.

HVAC specialists may be able to help in the proactive determination of indoor air quality to the benefit of the occupants. After pinpointing the problem, they could assist in fixing the issue especially if it is related to the air conditioning and heating systems.
