The air conditioning system is not getting enough air returned from the house……for a variety of reasons. We’ve seen return air grills set in the floor that are partly or entirely covered by a rug, for example.
In addition to increasing operating costs, inadequate volume of return air back to the indoor HVAC coil is a major factor in shortening the life of central air conditioners. Too little air across the indoor coil can potentially lower the coil temperature to the point of ice formation on the indoor coil. An air conditioner with its indoor coil covered with ice is in a “destruction mode”.
