SEER is an abbreviation for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. It is the most commonly used
measure of the efficiency of consumer central air conditioning systems. (EER, or Energy
Efficiency Rating is the most commonly used measure of efficiency for commericial air
conditioning systems.)
An Air conditioner must have a SEER of at least 10 to be sold in the United States, and recent
Federal regulations, enacted January 2006, require manufacturers to build a minimum of 13 SEER.
High efficiency models have a SEER of 14, 15 or higher.
* Current Annual operating cost is estimated on older equipment installed at no higher than 10 SEER
and operating at a reduced efficiency based on aging and natural diminishment of operating
components. Actual cost may vary.
